For the third time in his career, catcher Lyle Lin heard his name called in the MLB Draft – this time by the hometown Arizona Diamondbacks in the 14thround with the 422 overall pick.
The two-time All-Pac-12 selection saw career numbers offensively in 2019 where he was named an All-Conference designated hitter. Lin bat.299 with a career-high nine home runs and 50 RBIs. Lin slugged.457 on the year and struck out a team-low 25 times.
Lin finished as a career.301 hitter in the Maroon and Gold, registering 199 hits, 33 doubles, 93 RBIs and 13 home runs. Lin never struck out more than 33 times in a season while posting a.343 career on-base percentage.
Carter Aldrete did a little bit of everything for the Sun Devils this season, and was rewarded with a 15th-round selection by the San Francisco Giants – the same organization that drafted Hunter Bishop 10thoverall on Monday and sending Aldrete back to his home region in Northern California.
Aldrete also set numerous career highs this season, finishing the year with a.284 average and 45 RBIs. Aldrete finished with nine home runs and 13 doubles for a solid.474 slugging percentage while reaching base at a.357 clip. He was among ASU's top hitters with runners in scoring position this year, tied for second on the team with 26 hits and a.313 average.
He finished with 107 RBIs in his career at ASU, with 15 home runs and 35 doubles – reaching double-digits in the category in each of his three seasons. Aldrete significantly improved defensively this season, posting just three errors on the year between his time in right field and across the infielder for the Devils.
Sam Romero has served in every role imaginable in his two years on the Sun Devil pitching staff, spending much of last season as a weekend starter before shifting to a number of roles out of the bullpen this season in addition to starting in several midweek tilts. As a result, he was selected in the 40thround on Wednesdat by the Oakland Athletics.
Romero finished with a 5-3 career record and had a 4.23 ERA this season. He posted 100 strikeouts in two seasons at ASU in 111.2 innings pitched with 39 K's in 44.2 innings as a senior. He gave up just 11 extra base hits this season after allowing 27 last year.
The highlight of his year came in a four-game span in games against Cal Baptist, Oregon and Arizona in which he recorded two wins and two saves and factored into the decision of each game and allowed just one run over 13.1 innings across the four appearances. He struck out 14 and walked two during the streak.
