Ottawa University issued the following announcement on Oct. 8
The Golden State Athletic Conference schedule did not start the way OUAZ men's soccer on last week, but they get a chance to get back on track against Arizona Christian on Saturday.
The Spirit will host the Firestorm in a pivotal matchup for OUAZ. The team sits 1-1 in GSAC play, and falling behind 1-2 could significantly hurt the Spirit's hopes of a conference title in a tough league. To OUAZ head coach
Matt Gow, this is an important game in determining whether the team will have a shot at hosting the conference tournament.
"If we want to win the conference, we have to win this game Saturday," Gow said. "Our goal in the beginning was we wanted to go into the last weekend of play with a chance to win the conference. If we want that to be the case, I think we have to win this game."

AGAINST THE OPPOSITION
The Spirit have picked up one of each decision against the Firestorm. They lost to ACU 5-1 in OUAZ's inaugural game, won the 2017 rematch 3-0, and tied in the first ever GSAC game between the two teams, 3-3, in 2018.
"We have enough returners that know it's a rivalry game. Year one, (ACU) beat us in our first game ever as a program, and they smacked us. Then we turned around a month and a half later and we smacked them. That created a rivalry right away. Then we turned around in our second year and we tied. We got a buffer match on our hand." – Gow, talking about the history between his team and the Firestorm
Samuel George's stellar junior season continued this past weekend, and his performance allowed his to stay in the top five in the GSAC in many offensive categories. He is second in points (26), third in goals (10), first in assists (6), tied for second in shots (31), and tied for first in game-winning goals (3).
Cristian Gennaro is not far behind George in most of the same categories. He is third in points (25), second in goals (11), second in shots (31), first in shots on goal (21), and tied for first in game-winning goals (3).
The team's +35-goal differential is the second best in the conference. The only team with a higher differential is Arizona Christian (+37).
Since OUAZ's loss to Benedictine-Mesa on September 14, 2017, the Spirit have complied a 6-1-1 record against in-state opponents. OUAZ has been 1-0-1 against Arizona Christian in that span.
The Spirit will head to Northern California for its first conference road trip of 2019. The team plays at Menlo on October 17, and then heads over to William Jessup on October 19.
